Turbochargers, Parts, & Upgrades
The 1988 thru 1991.5 Cummins Diesel/Dodge Ram has a 160 hp engine that is unique to these years because it was not air-to air charge air cooled and so unlike most 1991.5 and later applications it had a 2” hose outlet on the compressor housing as opposed to a v-band outlet on later trucks. This turbo also has a 3” compressor inlet as opposed to the 4” compressor inlet on 91 and later trucks. Note that these upgrades apply to 1991 trucks that were not air to air charge air cooled. If your 1991 truck is air to air charge air cooled, you need to see the 1991.5 to 1993 applicable upgrades, below.
These trucks are equipped stock with a H1C non-wastegated turbo with the standard 70mm dia (60mm exducer) turbine wheel, a 18cm2 turbine housing and a 50mm inducer compressor wheel.
On these applications it is best increase the compressor wheel size and housing for more cfm flow capacity (later trucks all have larger compressors) and to use a smaller cm2 turbine housing area for quicker response and more power.
The 1991.5 thru 1993 Cummins Diesel/Dodge Ram has a 160 hp engine that is air-to-air charge air cooled, the compressor housing has a v-band outlet and a 4” compressor inlet.
These trucks are equipped stock with a non-wastegated H1C turbo with the standard 70mm dia (60mm exducer) turbine wheel, a 18cm2 turbine housing, except for the first approximately 70,000 trucks built with air to air charge air cooling that were released with 21cm2 turbine housings. These turbochargers all have a 54mm inducer compressor wheel. Note that there were some 1991 trucks that were not air to air charge air cooled. These upgrades would not apply to those trucks, for upgrade information on those trucks see above for our 1988-1990 turbo upgrade information.
On these applications most people want a larger compressor wheel and housing (later years all use larger compressors) and a smaller cm2 turbine housing area (as on later year trucks) for quicker response and more power (especially those equipped with the 21cm2 housings, which are probably the most underpowered trucks the factory released, and those most benefited by a turbine housing upgrade).
